Web Development & Admin
I have been working with the Web since around 1993. I started coding HTML by hand in 1993, and thoroughly understand and follow all of the rules set out by the W3C standard for both HTML4 and CSS2. Coming from a company invlolved with the FDA, I am a stickler for regulations, and have found that many (if not all) of the commercial HTML editors produce code that is entirely non-compliant with the W3C standards. Perhaps a bit over-critical, but still... I also understand the nuances of cross-browser code, and have tested web pages against IE4 to IE6, NS3 to 6, Mozilla 0.6 to 0.9, Opera2 to 5, and even WebTV and AOL.

I have had my own website since 1993, and have run BostonHot.com and NeonEdge Design for several years now. My first website, "Perlz of Wizdom", distributed free Perl scripts & JavaScript code. These included page-editing scripts, a simple database, and a more secure alternative to Matt Wright's WWWBoard. The WWWBoard alternative included IP & email exclusion, curse-word filtering, and content-length limiting (you could post the Encyclopedia Brittanica to Matt Wright's script if you wanted to). Now, nms has taken on this responsibility (I am a contributing member).

As Intranet/Extranet Admin for Genome Therapeutics Corp., I was responsible for developing tools for their Intranet (over 50 servers) as well as configuring and building web servers, Apache modules, mail servers, and LDAP. At one point I was charged with building JVM on DEC True64, which at the time was not a supported platform. I also built Apache as a DSO build on True64, which was also not supported at the time (much of the build didn't work, and it took some time to figure out why).

Some of the projects I was in charge of at Genome Therapeutics Corp., were:
  • Creating an Employee Directory database
  • Modifying that database to use OpenLDAP
  • Specifying and developing a Lab Notebook Recall & Recording database.
  • Designing and developing an equipment database for IT
  • Designing and developing a remote newsletter subscription & distribution mechanism.
  • Developing a common Apache build for machine dependent configurations
  • Creating several administrative & system log analysis scripts
  • Optimizing existing applications
  • Y2k analysis of existing applications
As Web Developer for Synchronicity, Inc. in addition to other responsibilities I was charged with migrating their Customer Service application to run on top of one of their new commercial products. A large part of this responsibility involved making modifications and enhancements to the core product, documenting them, and then presenting those modifications to R&D.
