I have enjoyed working in the biotechnology field for over 12 years.
I have been involved with all sorts of aspects of this field, and
have found the work very rewarding. For bioMérieux, Inc, I designed and adminstered a complete ISO 9001 Calibration Control & Recall System from scatch. This system remained relatively unchanged from it's inception, and passed 6 ISO audits and 3 FDA audits without a finding. Developing this system included writing calibration procedures, auditing subcontractors, and tracking & recalling instruments for service. I was also required to maintain chemistry inventories and instrumentation for performing those calibrations. This system was used to ensure the proper calibration status of over 500 instruments. For Genome Therapeutics Corp., I was charged with several Informatics projects, including one that involved making extensive modifications to a commercial BLASTing application to support a different underlying architecture. The applicaton was called SeqWeb, which used GCG data files and the GCG Wisconsin Package. The scientist at GTC wanted to modify this to use FastA format data files, and use the WUBLAST Package for blasting. Additionally, the IT group wanted to offload all BLAST jobs to the new RedHat Linux compute cluster for processing, in an effort to reduce the load on the server (an old DEC Alpha box). Because of the extensive data parsing that goes on up-front, this required a near-complete rewrite of the entire front-end, while maintaining the existing GUI. Also, because the results produced by the two BLASTing Package differred so greatly, it required a complete rewrite of the back-end as well. Finally, in order to submit the individual jobs to the LSF queue, I had to write a non-blocking job management system to correctly submit and track the jobs in the compute cluster, and still report the correct results back to the correct user, as well as handling all errors appropriately.
