Electrical & Electronics
I have been involved with electricity & electronics for most of my career. I apprenticed as an electrician for over two years. I have been contracted to design and install fail-over controls; once for a refrigeration contractor and another time for a Kaiser compressor distributor. I owned my own business repairing home electronics, and have my own repair lab, including a Tektronix Mainframe with 11 plug-ins, A TDR, a spectrum analyzer, a binocular macroscope (for SMT work), a frequency counter, frequency generator, marker generator, signal generator & tracer, meters and more.

My most recent engineering position was at bioMérieux, Inc as a member of their Manufacturing Engineering department. bioMérieux offered a tremendous diversity of responsibilities for me, and I enjoyed the work tremendously. When the only software developer left, I took on all of his responsibilities as well. One of his responsibilities was to develop an automated flourescence detection system that would perform 60 reads of four samples in under seconds. I developed a system of one master and four slave processor boards based on the Intel 8051c processor. This would then store the 60 reads of the four samples and repeat until it had read a total of 60 samples. At that point it would signal the AB PLC5/12 PLC of the machine handling the samples to stop, compute the average, CVs, the standard deviation, and set a range for acceptable parts. This was then displayed to the operator for acceptance, and the machine was restarted, at which point any additional reads that were outside of the acceptable range would be tagged as bad and rejected.

Also while at bioMérieux, I was involved in the design of their primary automated disposables manufacturing system. This helped to take the production of their disposables from less than 2000 partially complete assemblies per day, up to over 20,000 complete assemblies per day.
Some of my responsibilities at bioMérieux included:
  • Developing a Complete cGMP and ISO 9001 Calibration program.
  • Administering the Calibration program.
  • Designing controls and control wiring.
  • PLC Programming for AB PLC-5/12s, AB SLC-150s, and IDEC PLCs.
  • Designing custom fixtures and machine parts
  • Fabricating custom fixtures and machine parts
  • Writing documentation and maintenance procedures
  • Circuit board design
  • Developing a complete Intranet
  • Writing all in-house custom PC software applications.
